UPDATE: We have completed the rally and are now helping more teams to take ambulances. More info here: http://mongolia.charityrallies.org/en/Ambulances
Mongolia is a vast country, about the size of Western Europe, yet Western Europe has a population of around 500 million people and Mongolia has a population just under 3 million. So how does a country so vast provide adequate medical care to its people? The short answer is, with difficulty. The level of primary care is extremely basic with hospitals being short of equipment and medicines. Ambulances are few and extremely far between and in most cases are old Russian military vehicles ill equipped for saving lives.
Our aim is to deliver a dual purpose vehicle that can be used as an ambulance and also as a mobile clinic that can be used for vaccinations and screenings in rural areas where most people do not have direct access to medical care. Many Mongolians that fall ill will often have to make a journey that lasts for days to get to a hospital or even a doctor. Our vehicle will travel the rural communities providing care where care is currently unavailable. The vehicle we are taking is a Fiat Ducato ambulance that has just left NHS service. It will be fully equipped to modern standards and capable of meeting 21st century medical needs.
