Sprouts 'n' Krauts

Welcome to our team page!

We are Pete from Belgium and Ron from Germany and we make up team Sprouts 'n' Krauts. This summer we will take part in the Mongolian Charity Rally to raise money for Save the Children and would really welcome your support. You can donate online by credit or debit card at our Justgiving (UK) or Firstgiving (US) website. Donating through Justgiving and Firstgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. All the money we raise goes directly to Save the Children!!!

On 26 July 2008 we will set off from Berlin in Germany to make our way to Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, via 10,000 miles of roads ranging from the high speed Autobahns of Germany, to the potholed roads of Russia and the dirt tracks of Mongolia where paved roads are unheard-of. Our route will take us through Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Estonia to Moscow in Russia. From there we will continue our journey eastwards across the Ural Mountains into Siberia and finally into Mongolia where we will trace the steps of the great Genghis Khan and all in a little Opel Combo van! During the course of our drive we will receive no assistance from a support team, nor will there be any rescue crews to follow us should we encounter trouble. We will be completely on our own.

We do all this in the spirit of adventure and to raise awareness and funds for Save the Children. Save the Children is a leading international organisation helping children in need around the world. First established in the United Kingdom in 1919, separate national organisations have been set up in more than twenty-eight countries, sharing the aim of improving the lives of children through education, health care and economic opportunities, as well as emergency aid in cases of war, conflict and natural disasters such as the recent earthquake in China and the cyclone in Myanmar (Burma)

In Mongolia Save the Children began working in 1994. Their programmes expanded rapidly and they quickly became recognised as a key agency for the support and protection of children. They now have operations right across Mongolia. Current work largely focuses on education and child protection. In 2005, they received an award from Mongolia’s Human Rights Commission and were invited to join a council that consults with parliament on public policy issues. The main focus of their work is on long-term development, but in 2000 they launched an emergency programme to bring food and other aid to families in crisis during the harsh winter. Maintaining emergency preparedness is now also an ongoing part of their work in Mongolia.

Many thanks and best wishes,

Pete and Ron
