Children’s Charities to Benefit from Policemens' Big Challenge

TWO Medway police officers are planning a trip of a lifetime in aid of two children’s charities.

This July, PC’s Luke Andersen and Neil Cronin intend to drive approximately 15,000 miles from England to Mongolia in a 4x4 vehicle.

PC Andersen, 27, and PC Cronin, 25, who met through the force’s “car share” scheme, were inspired to take on famous Mongolian Rally Challenge after becoming avid viewers of “Long Way Round” in which Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman rode motorcycles along a similar route.

The route will take them through several destinations including Scandinavia, Russia, Khazakhstan and then Mongolia. The cash raised from the trip will be split between two charities, Demelza House and Save the Children.

On arrival at the capital city of Mongolia, Urlaan-Bataar, the duo also intends to donate their vehicle to the local emergency services

PC Cronin said: “On a usual trip into work, Luke brought up the series “Long Way Round” and we both agreed it would be an awesome experience.

“I did some research on the net and the idea has slowly turned into reality.”

PC Andersen added: “This challenge gives us the opportunity to learn about other cultures and countries as well as make a difference and raise money for charity.”

The policemen are expecting to take 40 days to complete their challenge and will be doing so in their own holiday time.

PC Cronin added: “As part of my police training, I was asked to spend time with Demelza House at Sittingbourne and after just one week there, I was amazed and touched by the support and love they managed to bring to lives and situations where others struggled."

“Ever since, I have always looked into what small token I may be able to give back or help in any way I possibly could."

“It now seems I may be able to finally achieve that, with the public’s donations and support."
