Maybe Tomorrow...
Driven by Charity in "Truck O' Luck"
We have crossed five mountain ranges, an uninhabited desert and who knows how many borders!
Now we have completed our journey, we have handed over the keys of the truck to the Charity Go Help who will sell the vehicle to raise funds for local Save The Children backed projects. Mongolia is one of the world’s poorest and most cut-off countries and the charities are using funds to help improve conditions, health and education for youngsters there.
We faced dangers from deadly wildlife, temperatures as low as minus 25C and a constant search for fuel to keep our truck on the often pot-holed roads and dried out river beds. As well as a supply of water and food, we carried vital spares and at least 100 litres of fuel to get us between locations that had garages. We learnt the international language of bribery to negotiate our way through some of the border crossings, and carried some big sticks to ward off the local wildlife.

MAYBE TODAY: ULAAN BAATAR/LONDON
It was the indie/rock sounds of 90’s surf band RootJoose which was the final album playing on the Truck-o-Luck’s stereo, as its wheels rolled onto the streets of Ulaan Baatar, heralding the end of its epic 7’500 mile dash across the globe, 37 days, across 7 countries and 8 time zones and they were there…
In the end, no dramatic event could stop Team Maybe Tomorrow, as a Mongolian police officer found when Nick curtly told him “you're having laugh mate”, after trying to enforce a tentative fix penalty fine for lane discipline offences. Nick promptly followed this up by telling him there was “No F****** sign anyway; call my embassy!”… Its fair to say by this time Team Maybe Tomorrow had learnt the most effective way to deal with corruption. The gun carrying official stood no chance against the roth of Bray.
The final days of the adventure whisked the Truck-o-Luck through Mongolia, from Oglii (the scene of their 3 day long raditor repair) to Ulaan Baatar in 5 days, 2 punctures, and one foiled fuel thieft. They left the snow covered Altai mountains behind them for the dusty expanse of central Mongolia, then once again ploughed into the snow on the final day, to be met in the capital by the snot freezing temperature of -19C.
The Truck O’ Luck has now been handed over to the charity GoHelp who recently sold a similar vehicle in Ulaan Baatar for £2700. The £750 worth of equipment on-board will be auctioned off, with the money raised going towards GoHelp and Save-the-Children projects in Mongolia. The food and clothes on-board are to be donated to an orphanage in Ulaan Baatar. And of course the “Shed”, TMT’s home for the 36 nights has been placed into storage to allow time for its “ora” to defuse.
In addition to this, and thanks to all of your kind donations, £2155 for Save-the-Children and nearly £1200 for Article-25, YoungConcern and GoHelp has been raised.
Don’t worry though if you have not yet donated and would like to, you can visit the new JustGiving page...
For every £5 you donate, you will be allocated a ticket for our forthcoming Charity Prize Draw in which you could win a luxury mini-break for four!
Team MaybeTomorrow is now working in Ulaan Baatar with its host charity GoHelp and Mongolia's special needs centre, with the hope to partner the centre with Priory School in Suffolk to provide a cultural exchange for the children, and education for the Mongolian staff who have little or no training in teaching and caring for children and young adults with special needs. As part of this TMT also hope to make future CharityRallies teams aware of what equipment is required here, so that they can collect and transport it. Watch this space for future blogs regarding their progress.
The journey here has been an incredible adventure. There have been some highs and lows, and to be honest, the Truck O’ Luck was not the only thing to boil over on occasion! But brotherhood is born from both overcoming the difficult times and from the countless varied fantastic experiences. Tom and Joe have returned home with some incredible stories and a refreshed outlook on life, helped by an upgrade to Club world on the flight home. As for Nick, MaybeTomorrow he’ll want to settle down, until tomorrow, he'll just keep moving on…
