Mongkats
Hmm so last summer was sat around with my flatmate Dan chatting about what a laught it would fun to do a rally, he was thinking Rome, Naples somewhere like that - a nice little weekend jaunt. Shame on him.
I got on t'interweb and found this. I couldn't persuade Dan to get involved so I didn't bother last year. Shame on me.
Dan is getting married next summer. So this year I decided it was time to get the credit card out and commit. I've told everyone I'm delivering an Ambulance to Mongolia so I guess I'd better pull my finger out and do it.
I went along the other week on a Friday night to a stock car racing track in Essex (really I couldn't think of a better way to spend my Friday either) to meet some of the last teams. We'll ignore the five hours it took to get there - not an ideal omen. Their advice:
- Dont plan too much (got that one covered)
- Sort out your visa's early
- Learn some Russian (erm, Dah I'm on it)
Next thing a plan:
- Get a team mate - A real one, not just a 'sounds brilliant I'd love to do that' one
- Source a trusty stead with blue flashing lights and a stretcher
- Kit out trusty stead with Ghettoblaster, beer fridge (not for the driver obviously) and beds
- Get some scrubs - doctor friends have agreed to help here
- Raise lots and lots of money for my charities
- Ideally find another team to convoy with (apparently a tow rope is pretty useful!)
- Work out a route
- Drive
How difficult can it be?
I have committed to raising £1500 for Go Help the Charity Rallies own excellent charity, everything over above that (dig deep people) will be going to Macmillan. Oh and obviously there's the ambulance, that will be donated to a suitable charity at the other end. I'm getting a warm fuzzy feeling in my tummy with all this giving.
Mongkats a go, go...

Mongkats meanderings
by Piers on 25 Nov 2009 at 08:36 Well like all good stories, we have begun. I use we in the royal sense of the word because at the moment, we is just me. But with a little perseverance, some intimidation and help from some Italian gentlemen in ill fitting shiny suits I'm sure there will be more of us soon.
Now to action.
I've drawn a map, it looks like something my 2 year old nephew did, actually its not that good. It shows roughly where I want to go, seems silly to drive all that way and not drop in on as many countries as possible. I may live to regret that plan but its mine and I'm sticking to it.
