After breaking my leg (tib and fib) riding my bike back in August 09 (a classic SMIDSY), I have been on crutches not being allowed to use it. However, last week has been good for my road to recovery, after my 3rd visit to hospital I am now allowed walk about using just one stick. It’s really weird sensation, using ones leg again after such a long time (13 weeks). I felt pretty scared the pain is going to come back, just after a fateful crunching sound. Having a broken leg is a real drag. On the 1st of September, 200 meters from my house I was involved in what is known in the biker world as a ‘SMIDSY’. SMIDSY is short for ‘sorry mate, I didn’t see you’ and resulted in both the bones in my lower leg breaking. I have been reading all the excellent articles on http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/. It has everything you could possibly need to know about transcontinental motorcycle travel. Maps, routes, plans, kit lists, stories, bike reviews, you name it. I can’t thank enough the contributors on the site; their hard work has been worth it in my eyes.  read more »

So today we met up for the first time as a trio in order to lay down plans for the upcoming trip to Mongolia. Up to this point, we knew only the basics; that we were going by motorcycle, that the target was Mongolia and that we’ve given ourselves three weeks in which to achieve it starting in July 2010.

Dave and myself met up with Richard at a busy Harvester pub/grub place in Bedford. Richard is still car bound as he recovers from his motorcycle accident so he drove, as did we when we saw the weather was going to be crap. The food was cheap and cheerful, so no complaints for the location.  read more »
