Getting out of London and being on the open road ..... the amazing wilderness of Mongolia ... new experiences ... and wild horses in wild places ... perfect pony car country!
NOT Looking forward to:
spine twisting, back breaking roads and a 29 year old Capri running on a wing and a prayer, gasping it's last petrol fuelled breath in the middle of nowhere!
Previous driving experience:
well, I can drive, I passed my test first time; and I have only crashed two or three times ...... "I've seen it on TV, of course"

Re: Andrew Emmett (Speedbird)

SpeedbirdSpeedbirdIt has become abundantly clear that I will have to do roadside repairs en route to Mongolia ... made all the more apparent by the Capri breaking on the way home from it's MOT!

So it looks like I am learning how to get my hands dirty and actually fix things ....

In the words of Harry Hogge ... "This is NOT the answer I am looking for from you..."

"I'd like to help... really I would ... but I am an idiot ... I mean I can drive ... They said get in the car and drive .. and I could ... but what you just said .. a turn here, a twist there... I have no idea what you are talking about ... I don't have the vocabulary ..."

"I'm gonna give you an engine low to the ground... extra thick oil pan to cut the wind from underneath you. I'll give you thirty or forty more horsepower. I'm gonna give you a fuel line that'll hold an extra gallon of gas. I'm gonna shave half an inch off you and shape you like a bullet. I'll get you primed, painted and weighed, and you'll be ready to go out on that racetrack. Hear me? You're gonna be perfect."

Film? Actors? Year?  Answers in the guest book please ...

Randomly selected correct answer wins a souvenir 'hunk of junk' from the Capri that went to Mongolia and back ...  ;-)

Re: Andrew Emmett (Speedbird)

You, sir, have won yourself  a souvenir 'hunk of junk' from the Capri that is going to Mongolia and back ... but since you are a Capri man, you probably have a few hunks of junk of your own ... so how about we raise the stakes a bit .. I could send you a bit of my Capri that is knackered ... suitably decorated of course; and you could send me something from your Capri that actually works ... as it stands at the moment I need washer bottle pumps for screen and headlamps, plus a headlamp washer unit as fitted on Ghia models ... one of mine is completely buggered - bolts sheared off, inlet hose connector destroyed ... not much of a trade I know but you could probably recondition it .... or I can spray it silver for you and you can use it as a door stop or paperweight!

You could take pride in knowing that you donated a really useful and important part to help keep my screen and headlamps clean on the rally ... and boy, the dust out there is unbelievable so I will need it for sure!

Re: Andrew Emmett (Speedbird)
Well what can i say ,i might be able to fit you up with a washer pump but the headlamp washers ,now there is a rare item,i did have a pair on an old 3,0Ghia but sadly they got squashed along with the shell ,much to my regret now even though they were useless

Re: Andrew Emmett (Speedbird)

Hi Shark,  I had no idea the headlamp washers were rare - until after i wrecked one of mine taking them off!  i should have left them on and painted around them!

Send me an email to the team email address 50degreesnorth@live.co.uk so I can contact you about the washer bottle pumps.

Also, have you got any info on the 4x4 Capri rally car at all? or photos?  Or for thast matter, by any chance do you know of such a thing as a Capri Rally Preparation Manual?  Just on the off-chance?

thanks for coming back to my team page by the way ... I appreciate the support!

Re: Andrew Emmett (Speedbird)

Andrew,

Hope all is well. My name is Will, one of the trustees of Go Help, and in charge of vehicle registration for 2009. You may have seen that we have had to tighten the vehicle rules in 2009, as the tax laws in Mongolia have been significantly tightened, meaning to import your Capri into the country would cost in excess of $2000.

I realise that you registered before these rules were introduced, but the rules have to apply, otherwise the NGO in Mongolia is left with a liability on their books.

You have a couple of options. I can see that you have spent a significant time preparing this car, so you can either do the round trip, whereby we tell customs that you are transiting Mongolia, or you pay the import tax yourself if you want to import the car and leave it in Mongolia. The resale value of a capri is unlikely to cover the cost of tax, hence why we have to insist on the latter if you want to leave the car in Mongolia.

Can you confirm that you are doing the round trip (i.e. driving back to the UK) or that you are happy to cover the import costs yourself.

Any further questions please call me on 07767246548, or email me on will@gohelp.org.uk

Thanks, Will

Re: Andrew Emmett (Speedbird)

Hi Will,

For legal reasons I can confirm that I am doing the round trip. If for some reason the car fails beyond repair, I will cover the importation tax and any disposal charges.

 On the other hand ...

Team 50*North ... A Capri to Mongolia ... and back ...

That kind of says it all ...

The Capri is no use to a Mongolian ... a wannnabe street racer might fancy it... but he's not getting it!

The truth is there are plenty of retro car fans in the UK & worldwide who are really excited by this project ... and equally, there are plenty who don't want to see me do this ... they think I will break the Capri in western Mongolia ...  so this trip is all about proving the doubters and the rivet counters wrong .... old cars are meant to be driven ... this Capri is not a show car ... Carla will make the return trip ... anyone who says different is just a ... well, a word I don't want to write here ...... this car will be well prepared, the trip well plannned, the spirit of adventure well adopted; the call of the wild will be answered ... and because it is the modern world, bureaucracy will be followed ... in  as much as it is necessary to live the dream!

In short, this Capri is going to Mongolia .... and back ...

Anyone brave enough to say different?
