Medics answer emergency call - from 4000 miles away Caroline Wilson 17 Jun 2011 Two Glasgow doctors are preparing to answer an emergency call more than 4000 miles away. Roland Partridge, a paediatric surgeon at Yorkhill hospital, and Dr Julia McGill, a locum GP, are gearing up to drive from the city to Mongolia in an old ambulance nicknamed Bella. Their mammoth journey will take them through 17 countries, including Russia, Iran, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. They hope to complete the drive in four to six weeks and will deliver the ambulance to a children’s hospital in Ulaanbaatar, the Mongolian capital.

The route is in excess of 4000 miles, and will take approximately 4 weeks, travelling through some very challenging environments. The adventure will raise both awareness and funds for Yorkhill Children's Foundation and the Mongolian Children's Charity Go Help. The two met in 1996 when they went up to Oxford University to read Medicine. They have taken part in various charity projects over the years but Yorkhill is particularly close to their hearts. Mr Partridge (33), whom you might recognise from his brilliant performance as Buzz Lightyear in Yorkhill's 2010 Christmas Panto, says "I love working at Yorkhill - it's a privilege to participate in fundraising for such a good cause". Dr McGill (33) is a former pupil of St Ninian's High School in Kirkintilloch. She is no stranger to the wards of Yorkhill, having been admitted herself several times as a child, and having previously worked next door at Queen Mother's Maternity Hospital. Dr McGill tells us "It is so important to provide children with the best possible start and we hope that this expedition will help children at home, and abroad".
