We are now back home after 22 odd hours traveling via Moscow and Berlin to Gatwick. I am back to work and finding it difficult to concentrate without going off on a day dream every now and again. I'm sure this will pass in time smiley-laughing.gif All I can say is if you are thinking of doing it yourself is 'do it!' you won't regret it. It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life and I cannot think of a moment I did not want to be where we were at the time, even being grilled by the police for the umpteenth time that day.  read more »

Limping the last 170 miles with a 2 inch ratchet holding the rear sub frame together. Had our first blow out last night and both thought the back axle had given out. All fingers crossed :-).

We went for a 14 hour drive pushing hard today with only a couple of stops to cover less than 200 miles. Managed after much deliberation and both wading knee deep to do our first proper river crossing. Working out that the only accurate thing on our Mongolian map was the price we got lost again to be helped back on track by 2 Mongolian border guards on a scooter following them for 10 miles plus we had the confidence to cross the next few without wading and a managed to get a good bow wave going! Went from bad to worse crossing a pitted marshland where we think the damage of the day was done breaking the rear sub frame :~( Ever changing scenery kept us going with jaw dropping vistas at every turn.  read more »

We were lost but now found.:-) used every off road function today, low ratio 4wd. Cracked the sump but nursed it to a nice man with a welder. Good day!

Left the border heading for Ulaangom and the northern route but turned back after being told the road has been washed out. We stuck with Tim and James going south having the best camp up yet in the middle of a deserted ‘Outer Mongolia’. Great sunset and a bellyful of camp food off to bed for the coldest night yet at 8 and a half thousand feet. Got up and drove to Hovd filling up with the dreaded 80 ron benzene again, stocking up in the market and saying our goodbyes Tim and James hoping to meet up again in UB. Now heading back north to rejoin the northern route on the other side of the wash out. *Grin*
